Kumano Hongu Taisha Shrine

Kumano Hongu Taisha is one of the three sacred shrines of Kumano Sanzan, located in Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, and serves as the head shrine of the many Kumano shrines found throughout Japan.

The shrine was originally enshrined at Oyunohara, a sacred sandbank where the Kumano, Otonashi, and Iwata rivers converge, and has long been revered as a symbol of faith rooted in harmony with nature.
Today, the shrine stands on a quiet hillside surrounded by mountains, where towering cedar trees create a solemn and spiritual atmosphere. As the final destination of the historic Kumano Pilgrimage, it has drawn worshippers since the Heian period. Even now, Kumano Hongu Taisha continues to attract visitors as a sacred place to purify the mind and body and take a meaningful step forward.
