Engetsu Island

Engetsu Island is a small, picturesque island floating just off the coast of Shirahama in Wakayama Prefecture.
Its name comes from the perfectly round hole in the center of the island, naturally carved by wind and waves over centuries, resembling a full moon.
The island is especially famous at sunset, when the setting sun aligns with the circular opening, creating a magical and unforgettable scene.
Surrounded by calm seas and changing skies, Engetsu Island offers a peaceful yet striking view that captures the beauty of Japan’s coastal landscapes. It is one of Shirahama’s most beloved symbols and a must-see spot for visitors.
